If you have a hard floor make sure your first step of the day is on to something comforting, consider laying a small rug on both sides by the bed.

Have the right amount of throw pillows. the bed should look impressive and inviting when made …….yet not enough that stripping the bed down to get into it requires 5 minutes of discarding. Depending on the size of your bed 4-6 is an ideal number.

Have a place to sit other than on your bed, great for putting on your shoes, reading or having a chat with your partner. An upholstered stool at the end of a bed often works if your room is not large enough to have a separate chair.

Vary your lighting. Instead of flooding your room with 1 large bright central light add individual lamps or candles to give the bedroom an intimate and cosy atmosphere. If possible add dimmers to your lights to make the ambience softer.

Keep in mind that bedrooms are about sleeping. You certainly don’t need a television as this will stimulate your brain and keep your mind churning over before you can enter the land of nod.  The upside for this is you have more room for furniture and accessories and after all a television doesn’t really suit a bedroom’s ambience.

Your bedroom should be a place that makes you smile so add special pieces that you have acquired over the years that you can’t work out where to put them. If they are in a prominent place when you wake up their true personal meaning will be on show.

Your bedside table/s should be large enough to place your special items on top and most beneficial if it has a drawer or door under where you can place your daily bits and bobs there. The things that you need to place on your bedside are to be your personal style. An example is a lamp, a great book, a plant or flower or that special ornament that means much to you.

Look for that perfect mattress for you. After all if you are not getting enough sleep you will not be able to appreciate a truly beautiful room! You want a mattress that keeps  woodwork in you cool and gives great lumbar support and without saying looks good too.

Rather than being reminded of specific people in photographs when you are trying to fall asleep add elegant and calming photographs in your bedroom to induce peaceful vibes.

Create intimacy and add a dramatic touch to your bedroom but balance is the key factor. For instance if you were to add atmosphere by painting the walls a dark colour you would need to  have lighter highlights.  For example if you painted your walls dark grey have your ceiling and woodwork white to add clean lines.  Add a large elaborate light fitting and an interesting shaped headboard or a more simple straight lines bedhead with a statement piece over it and voila you will have a stunning statement bedroom.  Keep in mind that too many dark features will make the room look like a bordello.
