Important points that every bedroom needs

Your bedroom is your personal haven, and often your place to escape so don’t forget to make it special! A few simple refinements will leave you with an absolutely heavenly bedroom. ✨

Dramatic style bedroom

If you have a hard floor make sure your first step of the day is on to something comforting, consider laying a small rug on both sides by the bed.

Have the right amount of throw pillows. the bed should look impressive and inviting when made …….yet not enough that stripping the bed down to get into it requires 5 minutes of discarding. Depending on the size of your bed 4-6 is an ideal number.

Have a place to sit other than on your bed, great for putting on your shoes, reading or having a chat with your partner. An upholstered stool at the end of a bed often works if your room is not large enough to have a separate chair.

Vary your lighting. Instead of flooding your room with 1 large bright central light add individual lamps or candles to give the bedroom an intimate and cosy atmosphere. If possible add dimmers to your lights to make the ambience softer.

Scandinavian style bedroom

Keep in mind that bedrooms are about sleeping. You certainly don’t need a television as this will stimulate your brain and keep your mind churning over before you can enter the land of nod.  The upside for this is you have more room for furniture and accessories and after all a television doesn’t really suit a bedroom’s ambience.

Your bedroom should be a place that makes you smile so add special pieces that you have acquired over the years that you can’t work out where to put them. If they are in a prominent place when you wake up their true personal meaning will be on show.

Your bedside table/s should be large enough to place your special items on top and most beneficial if it has a drawer or door under where you can place your daily bits and bobs there. The things that you need to place on your bedside are to be your personal style. An example is a lamp, a great book, a plant or flower or that special ornament that means much to you.

Look for that perfect mattress for you. After all if you are not getting enough sleep you will not be able to appreciate a truly beautiful room! You want a mattress that keeps  woodwork in you cool and gives great lumbar support and without saying looks good too.

Rather than being reminded of specific people in photographs when you are trying to fall asleep add elegant and calming photographs in your bedroom to induce peaceful vibes.

Create intimacy and add a dramatic touch to your bedroom but balance is the key factor. For instance if you were to add atmosphere by painting the walls a dark colour you would need to  have lighter highlights.  For example if you painted your walls dark grey have your ceiling and woodwork white to add clean lines.  Add a large elaborate light fitting and an interesting shaped headboard or a more simple straight lines bedhead with a statement piece over it and voila you will have a stunning statement bedroom.  Keep in mind that too many dark features will make the room look like a bordello.

Loving this stunning bathroom using timber and lots of glass, streamline design sanitary-ware and fittings. Add an interesting tall potted plant to bring the outside in and voila you instantly add that element of difference.

In this image you will notice that there are different coloured timbers used,  which eliminates the “everything must match” look.

How to use the “Colour Yellow” in your little one’s bedroom

The colour experience All colours have a physical, emotional and psychological impact on us, that is dependent on a complex set of responses and experiences including biology, symbolism, culture, trends and our own personal experience. Colours have three main attributes, colour (hue), saturation (the purity of the colour) and value (the brightness of the colour).

Yellow can be overstimulating Yellow, at its purest saturation and with a high value, is intense and reflects a lot of light. This results in excessive stimulation of the eye that may cause fatigue and irritation. It’s true then that the use of this type of yellow, coupled with visual patterning and high brightness, may overstimulate any person, whether they are a baby or an adult. This shade is not ideal in a space such as a nursery, where a sense of tranquillity is preferred.

Finding the right shade The secret to using yellow in a baby’s nursery is both in the saturation and value of the colour, and the accents used to create harmony and balance within the room. There are thousands of yellows out there, from sunny yellow to citrus yellow, banana yellow and mellow yellow. The pastel end of yellow is ideal for a baby’s nursery, and can be harmonised with many accent colours, thereby serving the purpose of the room. If the need of the room is to make it cooler or more calming, green or blue-green would be an ideal accent. This soft grey has a restful feel.

Alternatively, if you’re intrigued yet still nervous about using yellow in your baby’s nursery, as a safe bet use it as an accent colour. By doing this you can still create a warm, happy and soothing environment without it becoming overwhelming.

Achieving the right balance Please keep in mind that yellow is so reflective, it is a chameleon-like colour that will take on the properties of what it is next to, just like white does. The light source will also affect how the shade appears. Before painting a whole wall paint a small square as a sample, or use a swatch taped up on the wall to view the shade in all types of light.

Don’t be afraid to use yellow in your baby’s nursery. When used the right way it’s a wonderfully gender-neutral colour that will give a soothing and calm feeling, together with the warmth of sunshine. When you select the shade you are happy with be mindful of the saturation, brightness and intensity of it. With the right shade of yellow used with appropriate accent colours, you will be able to create beauty and balance in the room.
